President’s Message – April 2021

Welcome to the website of the Peninsula Section of the National Council of Jewish Women. I’m so glad that you have found us! I wish that you are all well. As we enter the second spring of this pandemic, hope is peeking around the corner. I have received my two shots, and I hope that you have as well. The age for getting vaccinated in New York has just been lowered to include all adults, which means in a few months we may be able to gather together – in person – safely.

National Council of Jewish Women, Peninsula Section, has not slowed down, though we have been working in different formats.  Most of our meetings have taken place on Zoom, and all of our presentations to you have also been virtual in the past year. This, however, has allowed us to expand our network to those who are not local, and we’ve had members and speakers from all over the country and the world. We’ve been able to participate in presentations and parties given by our national affiliate, NCJW.Inc. and by our sister NCJW sections in other parts of the U.S. This is growing our sisterhood and sense of community. We are all in this together!

Some of our services have reopened. The NCJW Thrift Shop is open to the public again. The hours are somewhat reduced, but expanding all the time. We still need your donations for others to find! And you can shop there as well to discover its treasures. It is covid clean and much attention is paid to safety for all who enter. We could use more volunteers – so please think about giving your time.

The Five Town Early Learning Center has continued to teach our littlest citizens, while expanding to include siblings and children of essential workers. The Center for Adult Life Enrichment has reopened, offering in-person and virtual programs. Our Back to School Store committee has been providing needed items to local children through schools and agencies throughout this time. We are hopeful that the pop-up B2SS store will return in the future. Other Community Services will begin again, when allowed.

NCJW Peninsula Section will turn 85 in autumn, 2021! We are contemplating a recognition of our past, with an eye to the future. Check this website, the Bulletin, emails and mailings often for how you can join with us to share in exciting celebrations of the strong and dedicated women who have been the backbone of our section, extending our mission to improve the lives of women, children and families. New members – young, older, female, male –  are always welcome, and diversity yields strength. Join – or rejoin – and volunteer your time. The rewards of friendship, community and service are great. You will get as much out of it, or more, as those you assist. I hope to see you soon!
