NCJW offers many varied community services. We offer unique and exciting experiences to help others and enrich your life. Helping people is our goal. Make a difference, please become a volunteer.

ADULT SERVICES

Center for Adult Life Enrichment (CALE) -Volunteers participate in a thriving senior center which offers a variety of new and exciting programs, classes and lectures. Location for this community service is in the Carriage House at Hewlett High School.

Knitting Program - Our handy and dedicated volunteers knit and/or crochet unique lap and baby blankets. They deliver them to We Care Blankets which distributes them to Children's hospitals or Children's wards in hospitals around the tri-state area, bringing smiles and warmth to the recipients.

CHILDREN’S SERVICES

Awards-In cooperation with the appropriate staff members of Hewlett, Lawrence and Lynbrook High Schools, a graduating senior in each school who has shown leadership qualities and participation in community services is presented with a financial award from NCJW Peninsula Section.

Campership Volunteers extend every effort to send children who have financial need to summer sleep-away camp where their experiences are virtually life changing.

English as a New Language (ENL) and Special Tutorial Educational Program (STEP) - These two programs provide
K-12 students with volunteers who assist them (and their teachers) in all phases of learning and developmental progress. Volunteers knowledge of other languages is helpful but not necessary. These programs are in schools located in the Hewlett-Woodmere; Lawrence & Lynbrook School Districts.

Five Towns Early Learning Center (FTELC) - Our volunteers help children (18 months to 4 years old) who attend this program located in Inwood. Each child has the benefit of the volunteer's individual attention. The children experience creativity, curiosity and open-ended activities that develop critical learning.

Intergenerational Reading - This very special heartwarming activity takes place at the James Dever Elementary School in Valley Stream on Mondays. Young readers are encouraged by a volunteer to share and enjoy varied and exciting reading experiences.

Pre-School Dental and Vision Screening - These two separate programs teach good health habits. Our volunteers examine, test and uncover possible dental and/or vision issues. When problems are detected, parents are informed. These young children learn valuable lessons while having fun.

FAMILY SERVICES

Back 2 School Store - The Back 2 School Store™ is a two-day event set up like a department store. Adult volunteers escort children as they select clothing and supplies in their favorite colors and styles. While the children make their selections, parents and guests are invited to visit the Family Resource Center. Health screenings, nutrition, community and social services information is available.

Court Advocacy - People negotiating the court system while in crisis receive help from our volunteers who are trained to be advocates. These volunteers offer a support system with information concerning courtroom procedures at The Nassau County Family Court in Westbury. They are also listeners, helping the client have a voice to determine his or her own destiny.

SIBS Place - Volunteers work at this South Nassau Communities Hospital program in Hewlett, a free support group for children 5-17 years of age who have a seriously ill sibling or parent with cancer. They participate with the children in activities which include play, conversation, original projects, and trips to help them cope with many mixed and varied feelings.

Sulam – LI : The Hebrew word Sulam means “ladder.” Just as a ladder enables a person to grow, volunteers with this program enable children with special needs to reach new heights in their Jewish education. The program meets on Sundays from 10:00-Noon at the Friedberg JCC in Oceanside.
